Peter Steinberger's OpenClaw AI can now navigate your iPhone apps via screen mirroring. Plus: The creator joins OpenAI.

Imagine an AI that can tap through your iPhone's interface, respond to messages, and change settings—all without you lifting a finger.

That future just got a demo.

OpenClaw, an open-source AI agent created by Peter Steinberger, has demonstrated a new "community skill" capable of controlling an iPhone remotely. Shared by OpenAI iOS engineer Rounak Jain, this breakthrough showcases the potential of computer vision-driven automation on Apple's closed ecosystem.

The 40-Second Demo

In the demonstration, the AI agent performs a complex sequence of tasks entirely on its own:

  1. Reads an incoming WhatsApp message.
  2. Types a reply.
  3. Navigates to the Settings app.
  4. Toggles Bluetooth settings.

The entire process takes about 40 seconds.

How It Works (No Jailbreak Required)

Unlike previous attempts to automate iOS that required complex jailbreaks or hacks, OpenClaw uses a clever workaround: Screen Mirroring over Wi-Fi.

By mirroring the iPhone screen to a Mac, the AI "sees" the interface using computer vision models. It then sends input commands back to the device, effectively tapping and swiping like a human user would—albeit much slower.

The Reaction: Magic vs. Speed

The community reaction has been mixed.

  • The Optimists: See this as the holy grail of "hands-free" computing. Imagine an agent booking flights or organizing photos while you sleep.
  • The Skeptics: Point out the speed. A human could perform the same Bluetooth toggle in 3 seconds with a Control Center swipe, versus the AI's 40-second journey.

However, as with all AI demos, speed is just an optimization problem. The real breakthrough is capability.

Breaking News: Creator Joins OpenAI

In a major development for the AI agent space, creator Peter Steinberger has officially announced he is joining OpenAI.

Steinberger, known for his deep expertise in the Apple ecosystem (founder of PSPDFKit), will act as a bridge to advance agentic AI capabilities. As part of this transition, the company sponsoring the open-source OpenClaw project will also be collaborating to push the boundaries of what autonomous agents can do.

What This Means for iOS Automation

OpenClaw's approach signals a shift away from API-based integrations (which are limited on iOS) towards vision-based agents that use existing user interfaces. While slow today, this method is universal—if a human can see it and tap it, the AI can too.
